Randell is the second son of a stable master from Keroon. His family lived away from the hold at a summer pasture in the verdant fields of the Tillek highlands. He spent his days as a child of the fields, watching over the herdbeasts, ovines, runners and looking up at the clouds. Well, perhaps he spent more time watching the clouds than the herds, since his mind was a fertile field of imagination, and he tended to prefer fanciful stories over facts, chores and duty.

When he was old enough to study under the harper, he sat and listened intently, quickly learning all his lessons, and eventually with the help of the harper, began to help his younger brothers and sisters with their learning. His quickness to learn, and eagerness to know everything he could quickly made his family frustrated, as he spent more time learning the teaching songs and how to play his small wood flute than he spent doing his chores, and paying attention to his responsibilities.

On the recommendation of his older brother (*), he chose to travel to harper hall, but was quickly sent on to Ista island, as the hall at fort was bursting with recent students. With the last of his marks, he booked passage to Ista and wandered about the hold a few seven day before having a chance to interview with Master Caramak.

Approval to Apprentice status was quick, though he spent more time in the archives learning to copy than anything else, and his interest in learning was only supplemented a little with his voice and music training. His talent with the flute all but forgotten, he strove to make himself a help at gathers when they occurred. First at Grinstead, where the journeyman wished assistance, as she was tired and his soft dulcet flute a good addition to her voice and gitar. Then he found opportunity at Paradise Hold, where a storm curtailed any dancing outside, but to his joy, the holder cleared the dining hall floor and set the stage for harping, dancing and the taps wide open with good paradise wines.

Assistance for a young apprentice to the dolphin craft was provided, when Ashilem asked for scrolls on ship wrecks and anything he could find on dolphins of old. He spent many hours looking over scrolls, and eventually made copies for her on his own, that she might be able to work at her task without having to trudge up to the harper hall archives. That done, he discovered that among the hides were copies of old sea songs, and dolphin craft songs, which he copied with joy and shared with his fellow Harpers, hoping to obtain assistance in correcting the tunes. Old and blurred, he strove to make accurate copies, but feared they were not melodically correct, and requested the assistance of others who would better know the tuning of songs, as he was not ready to take upon himself the correcting of melody and harmony.

He can be found in the apprentice lounge, reading and making notes on his interests, and in the Archive Vault, making copies of hides for the journeymen there. His work in deft and sure hand has earned him a place of note, though he still remains an apprentice. What will happen to this young harper Apprentice? Will he turn and find his place in Harper Hall? Will he discover love for his friend Ashilem, after a few rather confused friendships in the hall? Will he ever grow up?
